Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team fell to 42nd-ranked in the consolation finals of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Birmingham, Ala., on Sunday.
Doubles was not played on Sunday, as the match opened with and decided in singles play.
Carla Tur Mari opened things up for the Cowgirls on four with a 6-3, 6-1 victory to give the Cowgirls the first lead of the match.
Freshman Viktoriya Lushkova followed up the triumph by picking up her seventh-straight win. Lushkova knocked off Allison Falkin of Illinois in a 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 win on one, stretching the Cowgirl lead to two.
The Illini, however, would respond with four straight victories on two, three, five and six.
Megan McCray split the first two sets of her match against Melissa Kopinski in the second spot. The Cowgirl freshman was outlasted in the third-set tiebreaker, however, falling, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.
The Illini tied the match with a 6-3, 6-4 win on six over Cowgirl junior Karyn Guttormsen. Alexis Casati gave Illinois the lead with a 7-5, 6-2 win over senior Kanyapat Narratana on three.
The match was decided on five when Katarina Adamovic fell to Louise Kwong of Illinois in a three-set match. Adamovic opened the match by taking a set advantage, snagging the first set, 6-2. Kwong forced a third set and eventually bested Adamovic 11-9 in a tight, third-set tiebreaker.
The Cowgirls return to the friendly confines of the Greenwood Tennis Center next Sunday, March 2, when they face Wichita State at 1 p.m.
