Cowgirls Rout No. 26 Ole Miss

Feb. 15, 2013

OXFORD, Miss. -

Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team notched its fifth victory of the season on Friday, upsetting No. 26 Ole Miss 6-1 in Oxford, Miss.

No. 36 Oklahoma State (5-1) went up 1-0 early on the Rebels, with Meghan Blevins and Karyn Guttormsen winning their match on two, 8-5, and Maria Alvarez and Lorena Gheorghe recording the 8-5 victory on three.

Mississippi tied the match back up at one a piece in singles play, however, as Marija Milutinovic defeated Cowgirl junior Kanyapat Narattana 6-1, 6-4 in the fifth spot.

From that point on, the Cowgirls dominated, winning all five remaining singles matches. Senior C.C. Sardinha was the first Cowgirl to notch a singles point, defeating Erin Stephens of Ole Miss in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Blevins bounced back from winning only one game in her second set to easily defeat Mississippi’s Mai El Kamash in the third set and take the victory 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Karyn Guttormsen clinched the match for the Cowgirls when she defeated Vief Vlaar 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 in the sixth spot.

Perhaps the two most impressive singles victories for the Cowgirls came with the match already in hand. Alvarez rallied from being down 4-1 in her third set to take the set and the match from Mississippi’s Julia Jones, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Cowgirl senior Malika Rose provided the highlight of the day, battling with 27th-ranked Caroline Rohde-Moe of Mississippi for three sets in an epic match. Rose finally took the victory and the upset, defeating Rohde-Moe 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 to end the match.

“It was a great win for our program,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “To come on the road and have this type of performance says a lot about how much this group has grown. We have another tough match tomorrow, but this one was good to win.”

The Cowgirls will be back in action on Saturday when they face off with Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss., at 2 p.m.
