NORMAN, Okla. -
Oklahoma State women’s tennis senior Kanyapat Narattana won her semifinal and final round matches at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Regional Championship on Monday to take home the tournament singles title. With the win, Narattana became the first Cowgirl in the Big 12 era to win an ITA Regional singles championship.
Narattana snagged her fifth singles victory of the weekend in the tournament semifinals over seventh-seeded Yelena Nemchen of Tulsa in a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 match to advance to the final round.
It was a Bedlam matchup in the finals as Narattana took on fourth-seeded and 47th-ranked Hermon Brhane of Oklahoma to decide the tournament champion. The senior Cowgirl dropped the match’s first set, but dominated the second and third sets to take the match and title from Brhane, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
“I’m very proud of Kanyapat for her performance this weekend,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “As a senior, she’s worked for this for a long time. She had a good mindset going into this weekend, and I was very happy with the way she prepared and executed. Her hard work has paid off and I am proud of how she is representing our program on a national level.”
As the ITA Central Region singles champion, Narattana receives an automatic bid to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y., in November.
The Cowgirls will travel to Orlando, Fla., next weekend to compete in the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational beginning on Thursday, Oct. 24.
