College Station, Texas -- The No. 37 and fifth-seeded Oklahoma State Cowgirls dropped their first match of the Big 12 Championships to the No. 13 and fourth-seeded Texas Longhorns, 4-1.
In a match that went to four, the Longhorns took the doubles point, winning on courts No. 2 and 3. The No. 50 duo of Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana kept the match close on No. 1 against the No. 55 tandem of Lina Padegimaite and Noel Scott but did not finish as the doubles point was already decided.
Despite Texas having the doubles advantage, the Cowgirls brought the heat as they took the first set on four courts, three of which were decided by tie-breakers.
However, Texas notched two quick wins at Nos. 1 and 6, giving the Longhorns a 3-0 lead.
Meghan Blevins grabbed the lone point for the Cowgirls with a straight-set win over Noel Scott at No. 3, 7-6, 6-4.
The Cowgirls were down 3-1 when Longhorn Cierra Gaytan-Leach sealed the victory for Texas winning the third set at No. 5 against Cowgirl Mary Jeremiah.
Play at Nos. 2 and 4 did not finish.
"I think the teams were very even," coach Chris Young said. "I think if we would have finished this match out, it could have easily been 4-3. They won the doubles where last time we did. I think that was the honest difference in the match. I think this team is really coming into its own the last week and we are hoping we have more tennis left to play at NCAAs."
The NCAA women's tennis selection show will be May 1 at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com
