April 7, 2013

AMES, Iowa -

Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team picked up its second win of the weekend on Sunday, defeating Iowa State, 6-1.

The Cowgirls (12-5, 4-2 Big 12) set the tone for the match early, winning on all three doubles courts. C.C. Sardinha and Lorena Gheorghe teamed up to control the match on three, 8-2. Meghan Blevins and Karyn Guttormsen clinched the point for Oklahoma State by defeating Iowa State’s Simona Cacciuttolo and Meghan Cassens in the second doubles spot. Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana took their match on one, 8-6.

Oklahoma State continued to roll in singles play, winning on five of the six singles courts. Kanyapat Narattana notched the first singles point of the day for the Cowgirls when she knocked off Emma Waites of Iowa State on court five, 6-1, 6-0. Shortly after, Karyn Guttormsen recorded another victory for Oklahoma State on six, defeating Caroline Andersen, 6-3, 6-3.

Senior C.C. Sardinha would clinch the match for the Cowgirls on three with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Meghan Cassens.

After the match was in hand for the Cowgirls, the Cyclones put themselves on the board after Iowa State’s Ksenia Pronina recorded a three-set victory over Meghan Blevins in the second spot.

Cowgirl Maria Alvarez notched a straight-set victory over Ana Gasparovic on four, and Malika Rose finished off the match with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Simona Cacciuttolo on the first court.

“This was a great road trip for us,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “Logistically, it was a challenge, but the girls handled everything well, and I’m proud of the way they competed.”

The Cowgirl tennis team will return to Stillwater next weekend for a pair of home matches. Oklahoma State will face off against No. 35 TCU on Friday at 3 p.m., and return on Sunday to take on 42nd-ranked Baylor at 1 p.m.
