WAMEGO, Kan.—The No. 56 Oklahoma State women’s tennis team improved to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in Big 12 play when it defeated Kansas State, 5-2, Friday in Wamego, Kan.
“Today was an example of the strength of our team,” coach Chris Young said. “We got the doubles point again, and the depth of our team showed as everyone played well in singles.”
The first point for the Cowgirls came from doubles wins at Nos. 1 and 2 as Kanyapat Narattana and Malika Rose defeated Petra Niedermayerova and Karla Bonacic, 8-6, and Meghan Blevins and Mary Jeremiah defeated Marketa Trousilova and Carli Wischhoff, 8-4.
The Cowgirls went on to win four of the six singles matches including a huge win from C.C. Sardinha over No. 24-ranked and reigning Big 12 player of the year Petra Niedermayerova after three sets.
“Obviously C.C.’s win was big,” Young said. “[Niedermayerova] hasn’t lost much the past two years, and it’s a sign of C.C.’s development in her two years here and her competitive spirit. I’m happy for her and all of our girls because today was a total team effort.”
Other winners today included Blevins, Narattana and Jeremiah at Nos. 3, 4 and 5.
The Cowgirls return to the courts Sunday at 11 a.m. in Lawrence, Kan., to battle the Kansas Jayhawks.
