Cowgirls Roll No. 49 Arkansas, 6-0

Feb. 2, 2014

Oklahoma State’s women’s tennis team picked up its first win of the season in dominating fashion on Sunday, shutting out the 49th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks, 6-0.

Cowgirls Kanyapat Narattana and Viktoriya Lushkova led the way in doubles, upending Razorbacks Kimberley-Ann Surin and Brittany Huxley, 6-0, on one. Karyn Guttormsen and Katarina Adamovic clinched the doubles point for the Cowgirls, knocking off Sarah McLean and Shannon Hudson of Arkansas, 6-3.

After picking up the early lead, the Cowgirls never looked back. The team picked up five more wins in singles play, all of which came in straight-sets. Junior Karyn Guttormsen was the first to finish off her opponent, downing Brittany Huxley of Arkansas on six, 6-0, 6-2, and stretching the Oklahoma State lead to two.

Cowgirl freshman Carla Tur Mari was the next to strike with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Oleksandra Shkorupeieva on five to push the advantage to three.

Megan McCray clinched the match for the Cowgirls when she defeated Razorback Sarah McLean in a 7-5, 6-3 triumph.

After the match was clinched, Cowgirl Viktoriya Lushkova snagged an impressive win over 79th-ranked Yang Pang of Arkansas on one, 6-1, 6-4.

After trailing, 3-1, early in her first set, freshman Katarina Adamovic won five straight games to storm back and take the set from Kimberley-Ann Surin. Adamovic carried that momentum over to her second set to outlast Surin, 6-3, 7-5, and deal the final blow to the Razorbacks.

“It was a great team win,” Cowgirl tennis coach Chris Young said. “Each girl stepped up and played well. Our freshmen are getting better with every match and today it was great to see them play with such confidence.”

The Cowgirls will be back in action when they hit the road to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Minneapolis, Minn., on Feb. 14.
