Sept. 21, 2009
Nearly 40 former players and coaches returned to Stillwater this past weekend for a softball alumni weekend, hosted by the Cowgirl Softball coaching staff. Former players from more than three decades of teams attended for a very successful weekend. The reunion officially began Friday evening as the attendees signed in and were assigned their former uniforms. A nine-inning slowpitch softball game ensued, with the over-30 players taking on their younger counterparts. While no official score was kept, it clearly appeared that the under-30s outscored the pre-2000 Cowgirls as Stephanie Hodges hit a home run over the left-field fence.
Everyone got together and reminisced following the game in the O-Club room on the concourse level of the OSU Athletics Center. Former Cowgirl softball coach Sandy Fischer was in attendance, fresh off her induction into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame last December. Saturday afternoon, Coach Rich Wieligman and his staff hosted a pregame tailgate party which also included a tour of the Athletics Center, which many of the former players had not seen since their time at OSU ended prior to the renovation in 2000-01. They were most impressed with the weight room, which was known as the Pit back in the day, where the softball squad had their indoor batting cages. The weekend concluded with all the former players watching the Cowboy football team defeat Rice, 41-24.
