Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team recorded three consecutive hits off Olympic gold medalist Lisa Fernandez, but the USA National Team was too much for the Cowgirls as Alicia Hollowell and Fernandez combined for a three-hit shutout here Monday night at ASA/Hall of Fame Stadium in exhibition action.
The Cowgirls put together three-consecutive hits in the top of the fourth as freshman Alysia Hamilton, senior Kim Kaye and sophomore Megan Castle each got a hit off Fernandez. However, Hamilton was thrown out trying to score to end the inning.
OSU starter Anna Whiddon sat Team USA down one-two-three in the bottom of the first as Katelyn Bright made a diving catch of a ball hit by Jessica Mendoza to end the inning.
The Cowgirls were not as fortunate in the second as Crystl Bustos led off the inning with a home run that hit the left-field foul pole. Lovieanne Jung knocked in Tairia Flowers who had doubled two batters earlier as Team USA took a 2-0 lead.
The Red, White and Blue extended the lead to 4-0 in the third when Mendoza and Bustos hit back-to-back solo shots off Whiddon.
OSU made its only noise of the game in the fourth when Fernandez entered the game. After leadoff hitter Mariah Gearhart fouled out to start the inning and Katelyn Bright grounded out to shortstop, Hamilton hit a bloop single to shallow right-centerfield. Kaye followed that with a base hit up the middle, and Castle then hit a single to left field. Hamilton rounded third and was thrown out by Mendoza.
Team USA added three runs in the sixth on four hits, including a two-run single by Watley for the final score.
Oklahoma State will return to action on Wednesday as the Cowgirls travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to participate in the annual Border Wars. OSU will play Tulsa at 3 p.m. and Arkansas at 5 p.m. at Lady'Back Field.
