GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team picked up three wins Friday, improving their record to 5-0 heading into the final day of action at the UTA Classic.
Oklahoma State got off to a good start Friday morning, defeating Louisiana-Monroe 5-1 in the first game of the day. OSU scored its first three runs in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Calli Behmer hit a three-run homer, knocking home junior Ryan Realmuto and senior Teresa Ritchie who both reached base by walk. OSU added a run in the sixth inning when senior Summer Younk hit a solo home run to give the Cowgirls the final 5-1 advantage.
Junior Lauren Bay continued to perform well on the mound, striking out 14 batters, walking two and giving up five hits in seven innings.
In the second game, the Cowgirls defeated tournament host, Texas-Arlington 3-1. Oklahoma State started the game strong with a solo home run by lead-off batter, senior Jenny Kipp, in the bottom of the first inning. Kipp led off the third inning with a single and reached second thanks to a sacrifice bunt by freshman Megan Carey. Realmuto hit her third home run of the tournament, a two-run dinger, to give OSU a 3-0 lead. UTA hit a home run in the top of the fourth to make the final score 3-1.
Cowgirl junior Cami Carter threw five and one-third innings, giving up six hits, one walk and striking out four before Bay came on in relief in the sixth.
Oklahoma State finished pool play with a 4-0 record and received a No. 1 seed for bracket play which began late Friday afternoon. The Cowgirls faced Utah in a quarterfinal game at 4 p.m. and won 12-1 in six innings.
In the first inning, Carey scored the first Cowgirl run on a double by Realmuto. In the top of the fourth, Realmuto, who was 2-3 at the plate with one RBI, stepped up and hit her sixth extra base hit of the tournament. Sophomore Jade Lindly, also 2-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs, hit her fourth home run in two days to give the Cowgirls a 3-0 advantage.
Utah scored one run in the bottom of the fifth with two outs before the Cowgirls went on a scoring spree, crossing the plate nine times in the sixth inning. Realmuto led off with a walk and Lindly followed with a single. Junior Stephanie Hodges reached first on an error and sophomore Calli Behmer followed with a bunt that scored freshman Erika Ennis who was pinch running for Realmuto. Lindly scored OSU's fifth run on a single by senior Summer Younk. The Cowgirls continued to pick apart Utah's pitcher, when senior Jenny Kipp and freshman Megan Carey each had base hits to score Behmer and Younk. Bay scored the final Cowgirl run while Lindly was caught in a run-down between second and third.
Bay once again turned in a strong performance on the mound, recording eight strikeouts, one walk and four hits in six innings.
Oklahoma State (5-0) advances to the semifinals where they will face tournament host, Texas-Arlington at 9 a.m. The other semifinal game will take place between Baylor and OU. The winner of both games advances the finals which will be played Sunday at noon.
