PLANT CITY, Fla. - Oklahoma State's softball team dropped its final game in pool play here Saturday in the Speedline Invitational, but still managed to win its pool. OSU suffered its first loss of the weekend against Purdue, 1-0.
After winning its pool, OSU advanced to the 7 p.m. tournament game against Brigham Young. The Cowgirls fell to BYU, 4-3, in eight innings and were eliminated from the tournament .
In game one, the Cowgirls and Boilermakers were scoreless for the first six innings of play until Purdue broke the stalemate in the bottom of the seventh. Laura Martin had a single to get on base and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Shelli Messer. Martin then scored the winning run on a Cowgirl error.
Lauren Bay picked up the loss on the mound. Bay struck out nine batters, walked three and allowed two hits against the Boilermakers.
Despite the loss to Purdue, the Cowgirls still won their pool. After five games, Oklahoma State, Purdue and UT-Chattanooga all finished with a 4-1 record. Due to the the three-way tie, the winner of the pool was determined by the number of runs scored against each of the three teams. Oklahoma State finished with one less than UT-Chattanooga and emerged as the winner of pool play.
In second game, BYU struck first with a run in the bottom of the first. Megan Johnson reached on an error and Brooke Cadiente earned the RBI with a base hit to give BYU a 1-0 advantage.
The Cowgirls evened the score in the top of the fifth. Calli Behmer led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice hit by Nicci Quiroz. Summer Younk hit a double to bring Behmer home and tie the game at one-all.
Neither team was able to score again and the international tie-breaker inning followed. In the eight inning, Jenny Kipp started on second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice hit by Casey O'Neill. Kipp then scored on a passed ball and Realmuto completed the inning with a solo home run to give OSU a 3-1 lead.
BYU answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs to earn the win. Debbie Dobbs started on second base and advanced to third on a Oli Keohohou intentional walk. Pinch-hitter Liz Vanderlinden hit a single to load the bases and Dobbs scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, BYU's Cynthia Fallowfiield hit a clutch double to bring home Keohohou and Vanderlinden and give BYU the victory.
Cami Carter started for the Cowgirls and threw seven innings before Bay came on in relief in the eighth. Carter struck out eight batters, walked three and allowed four hits. Bay (10-5) took the loss on the mound, striking out two batters and giving up one hit in one inning of work.
With the loss, Oklahoma State (15-8) was eliminated from the Speedline Invitational tournament. OSU returns home to Cowgirl Field to face Creighton on Tuesday, March 12, at 2 p.m. The Creighton game was listed incorrectly on the schedules as a Feb. 12 game.
