TAMPA, Fla. - Oklahoma State's softball team split on the second day of action at the Speedline Invitational on Friday, defeating Maryland 6-1 and falling to Florida Atlantic 2-1.
Maryland scored a run in the top of the first but the Cowgirls answered with three of their own in the bottom of the frame and never looked back.
Oklahoma State led off the inning with base hits from Stephanie Nicholson, Calli Behmer and Brooke Siebel. Siebel's hit scored Nicholson and a passed ball and error later, Behmer and Siebel rounded the bases.
The Cowgirls added two more runs in the second on a double from Siebel and an error by Maryland's Jen Peel.
Realmuto earned the RBI for the final run of the game, knocking in Jade Lindly with a double to push the lead to five.
Lauren Bay (7-3) tied the single-game strikeout record at OSU, fanning 17 Lady Terrapins in seven innings. Bay now shares a record that has held since 1989 with U.S. Olympian Michele Smith. The lefty scattered a pair of hits and gave up one unearned run in the winning effort.
Florida Atlantic got off to a quick start, posting solo home runs in the first and second innings to take a lead it would never relinquish.
The Cowgirls cut the lead in half in the fourth on a base hit from Megan Carey but it was not enough as OSU could not get a runner past second in the final three innings.
Oklahoma State (12-6) faces Illinois-Chicago in the final contest of pool play at 1 p.m. (CST) on Saturday. The Cowgirls must await the results of Saturday's game before learning if they advance into bracket play.
