TEMPE, Ariz. — The No. 22 Oklahoma State softball team defeated Utah 5-3 here Sunday afternoon and finished 4-1 on the weekend at the Kajikawa Classic. Senior Ashley Boyd hit a two-run home run, her first of the season, and freshman Simone Freeman picked up her second win of the early season.

Utah (3-2) was the first to score when Tia Palauni hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning. Oklahoma State responded in the bottom of the second as Chelsea Garcia hit a single and stole second. Boyd then stepped up and hit the ball over the left field fence to give the Cowgirls a 2-1 lead.

OSU added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tamara Brown led the inning off with a walk and scored on a double by Garcia. Two batters later, Sammy Jo Diffendaffer hit a single through the right side to join Garcia on base. Both players scored on a single by Ari Morrison.

Freeman started in the circle for the Cowgirls and threw five innings, gave up three hits for one run and struck out five. She is now 2-1 on the season. Freshman Morgan Hawkins took over in the sixth inning and gave up three hits for two runs. Sophomore Kat Espinosa took over for Hawkins to get the final out of the sixth and threw a hitless seventh. She picked up her first save of the season.
