TOWSON, Md. – Oklahoma State forward Krista Lopez has been named the 2011 Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for NCAA Division I women’s soccer, it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) today.
Lopez is just the third OSU student-athlete to be named an Academic All-American of the Year, joining Lisa Harvey (1989 in softball) and Zack Robinson (2006 in men’s golf).
It also marks the second-straight year Lopez has been named to the Academic All-America First Team by CoSIDA, and she becomes the first player in OSU soccer history to earn that distinction.
Lopez, a senior who is double majoring in management and accounting and owns a cumulative 4.00 grade point average, helped lead OSU to the best season in school history in 2011 as the Cowgirls went 22-2-2, won a Big 12 Conference regular season championship and advanced to the quarterfinals on the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship for the second consecutive year.
A three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection, Lopez is also a finalist for the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and is a two-time Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar First-Team selection. She was named an OSU Senior of Significance last month and has made the OSU President’s Honor Roll 10 times during her career.
On the field, Lopez capped a successful senior season by earning All-Big 12 First Team honors for the second consecutive year, and she was also named to the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team. The Carrollton, Texas native ranked second on the Cowgirls in goals (8), assists (8) and points (24) in 2011, and she tied for the Big 12 lead with four game-winning goals. Lopez ended her career among the top 10 all time at OSU in each of those categories.
The Capital One Academic All-America Teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. To be eligible for Academic All-America status, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
