The former OSU standout enters the 2010-11 campaign riding the momentum of consecutive top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championship. In 2010, Young's squad finished eighth at the national tournament and crowned the program's first-ever NCAA champion in Caroline Hedwall. The sophomore's victory capped the most decorated season by a Cowgirl in school history as well. The NGCA National Player of the Year, the Golfstat Cup and the Honda Sports Award were among the achievements the two-time Big 12 Player of the Year racked up during the year. In her initial season at her alma mater, Young enjoyed a successful spring in 2009 that saw the Cowgirls pick up a pair of team titles and earn a top-five finish at the NCAA Championship. Young's squad broke through with its first team victory under her direction in dramatic fashion with a come-from-behind win at the Ping/ASU Invitational. The Cowgirls returned to the winner's circle three weeks later by successfully defending their Big 12 Championship. OSU wrapped up its inaugural season under Young with a fourth-place showing at the NCAA Championship in Owings Mills, Md. The fourth-place finish was OSU's first top 10 in the event since finishing eighth in 2005 and was its best showing since its runner-up finish in 2004. The Cowgirls enjoyed equal success individually under Young as freshman Caroline Hedwall was named a first-team All-American as well as the Big 12's Player and Newcomer of the Year. Joining Hedwall with All-America status were senior Pernilla Lindberg, a second-team pick, and freshman Caroline Masson, who earned honorable mention status. OSU's success was not limited to the course as senior Karin Kinnerud was named an academic All-American and was joined on the Big 12's academic all-conference squad by Lindberg and senior Amanda Johnson. A four-year letterwinner at Oklahoma State from 2001-05, Young became the fifth head coach in OSU women's golf history in December of 2008. A native of Highland, Utah, she graduated from OSU in 2005 with a degree in marketing. "I'm very excited -- this is a great opportunity," Young said. "It's a chance for me to come back home somewhat, that's what it feels like. My husband (Caleb) and I both love Stillwater so it's a great opportunity for us. "I've always wanted to coach and when the opportunity to go back to OSU came up, it seemed like the right thing to do and things fell into place quite nicely." One of the most decorated players in Cowgirl golf history, Young had a storied career on the links as a collegian. As a senior in 2005, she earned first-team All-America honors and was the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year. She captured medalist honors in leading OSU to the team title at the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship and helped the Cowgirls to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Young's career also included a 2004 Big 12 individual title, and she was a three-time All-Big 12 performer (2003-05). In 2004, she helped OSU to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships, which marked the best finish in Cowgirl golf history. As an amateur, Young competed in the U.S. Women's Open in 2003 and led the United States to a win in the 2004 Curtis Cup. She won the 2002 U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship in Sunriver, Ore., becoming the first woman from the state of Utah to win a USGA championship. The win also qualified her for the 102nd U.S. Women's Amateur. Following her OSU playing career, Young spent time playing on the Futures Tour, the developmental tour for the LPGA, and also competed in several LPGA Tour events. "I have a great coaching staff so although I don't have a lot of experience, they will be able to help me out quite a bit," Young said. "There's a lot of pride in the golf program at OSU, which you don't find in a lot of universities. That's going to help us take it to the next level." |
