Oklahoma State vs. Baylor Postgame Quotes

OSU Head Coach Kurt Budke
Opening Statement

“This was a very big win for us today. Baylor is a favorite in the Big 12 and definitely one of the best coached teams in the country. When you can come out and go toe-to-toe with them and find a way to win you have to feel good about your day’s work. I thought the kids came out and stuck with the game plan.”

On Andrea Riley
“When Andrea Riley is out there she gives you a chance to win every night. I’ve said this for a long time: I think Andrea is if not the best player, one of the best players in the country. She is one of the best players in the Big 12 if not the best player. She had one of those special nights tonight like the one we all witnessed a couple years ago. She had another one tonight.”

On trailing in the first half
“We have been down to other people. We found ourselves down nine or 10 to teams in that non-conference schedule and we found ways to come back. So being down nine or 10 doesn’t really bother this team because we can put some points up pretty quick. This is where the non-conference schedule paid off.”

On the win
I think this shows that we are dangerous. If you come in our gym, we have a chance to beat anyone. We’ve been ranked three straight years now so I don’t think it shows we’re back. I think it shows we’re not going anywhere.

Andrea Riley
On where the win ranks in her career games

“It’s pretty high on the map. I think our team came out with a lot of poise and a lot of confidence. I’m so proud of our team. I’m so proud of the newcomers how they stepped up and showed that, ‘Just because it’s my first game in the Big 12 doesn’t mean I’m going to fold.’ I think that they were level headed and they kept their composure and they excelled.”

On what got Oklahoma State back in the game in the first half
“Heart. Just absolute heart because we knew there was going to come a time when we would be down and we were going to have to stick together and not fold. I think that was one of the first adverse situations that we were in and we held our own. We really did. That’s a great basketball team and I think that they’re going be somewhere in the top of the Big 12 because they’re in the top 10 in the country. I think that our team has a long way to go too.”

On playing Baylor closely in recent years
“Every time we play Baylor it always comes down to the wire because we have similar styles of play. I think that since the coaches know each other we run a lot of the same sets also. I think guarding Baylor is like guarding ourselves in practice. I think we really just played against ourselves. They are good.”

Tegan Cunningham
On what was said at halftime

“Just keep playing hard. We had them in a good spot at half and in the end we just wanted it more. We had a great game plan and we worked on it for a week straight. We just wanted it more and we had nothing to lose. They were the fifth team in the nation and we just wanted to prove everyone a point that we can play with them and we won.”

On the Oklahoma State defense against Brittney Griner
“We had a double team organized and stuff, but if we were going to trap Griner we had to do it intensely. We really just had to make sure we committed to the trap and everyone just clog up the lane and let them shoot the outside shot. They haven’t really been a three-point shooting team so we just had to protect our basket first and obviously, when Griner got it we would double her.”

Baylor Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On the turning point of the game

“I thought the game was lost at the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half. We had a 10-point lead with two or three minutes to go in the first half and for whatever reason, too many freshmen on the floor, (Andrea) Riley, I don’t know, we lost the lead. We came out in the second half and they got the crowd into it and we didn’t respond.”

On injuries
“Two of our top eight players didn’t play today, but I don’t want to take anything away from Oklahoma State’s win. Melissa Jones has a stress reaction and we’re being very cautious because we don’t want to turn it in to a stress fracture. I’ll sit her the entire Big 12 if I have to so I can have her for the playoffs.”

On Andrea Riley
“You saw it. The girl shot it 40 times. You can’t guard her. She’s a senior. You take away those 43 points from the team, how many did they make? 35?”

“I think that is their game plan. They have three players that take the majority of the shots: Riley, Garrison, and Cunningham.”

Brittney Griner
“We made too any mistakes, we are going to have to work on it in practice. Each game I am getting experience and learning what is like in the Big 12.  It was intense; everybody says each game is a fight. There aren’t any weak opponents. It is a battle. It is going to be a battle each night in the Big 12.”
