Erassa, Juodeskaite each finish second individually
Sept. 28, 2013
The Oklahoma State men’s and women’s cross country teams each won their fourth-straight Cowboy Jamboree team championships, at the OSU Cross Country Course, on Saturday.
Inclement weather played a part, as lightning in the area delayed the start of the races for two and a half hours, but OSU was still able to put together a great performance.
On the men’s side, it was a huge matchup between the No. 1 Cowboys and No. 2 Northern Arizona, and OSU ran like the top-ranked team, winning by 28 points over Northern Arizona, 29-57. The Cowboys landed five runners in the top twelve spots, with Kirubel Erassa (24:28.16) and Shadrack Kipchirchir (24:28.55) leading the way, taking second and third, respectively.
“We were running against a very good team,” OSU coach Dave Smith said. “I’m always anxious to run against a team like that. You want to win, especially on your home course, so I think we were ready to run hard. I wish we could have had more guys in contact with Northern Arizona’s top two, which is what we’ll need to do to win in November. We have a lot to work on, but a good day overall.”
The OSU women were just as effective, winning the team title by 18 points over second-place Kentucky. Five Cowgirls placed in the top 15, led by Monika Juodeskaite (17:30.73), who took second, improving on her third-place finish in 2012.
“We told Monika to go for it,” Smith said. “She just missed out on the individual win, but the girl who beat her could be a top-10 finisher at Nationals. Monika will sharpen as the season goes on. We told the rest of the women to work together until there was about 1,500 meters left, then to go for it. They did a great job. I could go down the list individually, but I was proud of the way they ran.”
Overall, the OSU men have now won the Jamboree 19 times, 13 of which have occurred since 1957, when the current race format was implemented. Since the women began competing in 1977, the Cowgirls now have nine Jamboree team titles.
OSU Cross Country will be back in action at the Pre-National Invitational, on Oct. 19, in Terre Haute, Ind.
