Jan. 11, 2012

STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State redshirt freshman Kirubel Erassa has been named the USA Track and Field Athlete of the Week after taking first place in the junior men’s race at the Bupa Great Edinburgh Cross Country International Challenge on Jan. 7.

The event consisted of teams from the United States, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as a select European team, competing in men’s and women’s junior and senior races.

A native of Grayson, Ga., Erassa finished the 6,000-meter race in 19:56, sprinting past Kieron Clements and Mark Shaw of Great Britain in the final stretch to take first place. He was one of four Americans at the event to win a medal and the only one to bring home gold.

Erassa completed his first season of cross country at OSU in the fall. He won his first career event, the Hurricane Festival on Sept. 3, and was among the Cowboys’ scoring five at the Cowboy Jamboree.

Erassa was joined at the event by teammate Colby Lowe, who competed in the senior men’s team challenge 8,000-meter event.
