Cowboy Wrestling Great Visits OSU

Aug. 24, 2012

STILLWATER--Oklahoma State wrestling legend Yojiro Uetake visted the OSU campus today and spent the afternoon showing his friends and family around Gallagher-Iba Arena and visiting with football coach Mike Gundy and wrestling coach John Smith.

Uetake was a three-time NCAA champion in the 1960s, going undefeated in his collegiate career.  He also won Olympic gold medals in 1964 and 1968 for Japan.

Although he lives in Japan, Uetake said he is still well connected with the Cowboy wrestling program and coach Smith.

"I try to come back for Nationals every year, but I couldn't make it this year," Uetake said. "I like to visit with John Smith. I know him very well, and we have a very good relationship, and I think he is doing very well coaching."

"One of the best ever," Gundy said. "Anyone who follows OSU wrestling knows about Mr. Uetake. My dad (Ray) is a huge fan."
