Cowboy national champion adds to his impressive list of accomplishments.
German Fernandez
June 26, 2009
EUGENE, Ore. – Oklahoma State track and field standout German Fernandez turned in the best 5,000-meter time by any American junior athlete in history Friday, finishing in 13.25.46 at the 2009 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
That time easily beats the previous record of 13:29.98, set by Stanford’s Chris Derrick earlier this year. It was also enough for a fifth-place finish in the race, which included the top athletes from across the country. It was the highest finish by any collegiate athlete in the event.
Fernandez, who just capped a remarkable freshman season for the Cowboys by winning the 1,500-meter NCAA championship, also holds the junior world record and NCAA record in the indoor mile, as well as several Oklahoma State school records.
