STILLWATER, Okla. - Seven members of the Oklahoma State women's track and field team and six members of the Oklahoma State men's track and field team were named to the 2009 academic all-Big 12 squad, it was announced today. Special mention went to Cowboy distance runner Tucker Weems, who was one of only 15 athletes from around the league to post a perfect grade-point average.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
Notable members of the academic all-Big 12 team included Ryan Vail on the men's side and Baiba Blumbaha on the women's side. Vail is a three-time All-American who was an ESPN the Magazine first-team Academic All-American last year and is one of the top distance runners in the history of Cowboy track. He has earned a spot on the academic all-Big 12 track and field team four times. Blumbaha is a talented jumper who has earned a spot at the NCAA Regional Championships each of the last three years. She is now a three-time academic all-Big 12 honoree in track and field.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls compete at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock this Friday through Sunday.
