Coach Dave Smith Talks Cowboy Track

Oklahoma State track and field head coach Dave Smith joins Casey Kendrick on the OSU Spring Sports Roundup to talk about the achievements of the Cowboy Track program in 2012, as well as Tom Farrell's aspirations of representing Great Britain in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.

2013 Outdoors: Earned All-Big 12 recognition after finishing second in the 5,000 meters, just behind teammate Kirubel Erassa ... At the Mt. SAC Relays, ran the 1,500 meters in 3:41.33, finishing third ... Qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary in the 5,000 meters, and just missed out on advancing to Eugene, finishing 20th.

2013 Indoors: Anchored Oklahoma State's All-America Distance Medley Relay team that placed sixth at NCAAs in 9:35.55 ... That same relay squad set a school record when it clocked a 9:28.38 at the Alex Wilson Last Chance Meet ... Earned All-Big 12 honors with a seventh-place finish in the mile ... Was one of five Cowboys to run a sub-four-minute mile during the 2013 indoor season when he clocked a 3:58.20 at the Razorback Invitational ... That mark was good for third in school history ... Also generated the third-fastest 3,000-meter time in school history when he ran a 7:51.77 at the Husky Classic ... Placed 13th in the 3K at the NCAA meet with an 8:04.14 to earn second-team All-America honors.

2012 Cross Country: Among the top performers on Oklahoma State's Big 12 and NCAA-champion squad ... Earned All-America honors with a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships, finishing the 10,000 meter race in 29:26.3 ... Secured his third career cross country All-Big 12 honor by taking fourth at the conference meet in 24:00.6 ... Placed fourth at the NCAA Midwest Regional in 30:29.06 ... Ran the 10K Chile Pepper Festival in 30:41.2 to place 12th ... A first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection.

2012 Outdoors: Took an Olympic redshirt year ... Achieved an Olympic "A" Standard in the 5,000 meters when he ran a school record 13:15.31 at the Payton Jordan Invitational ... If he had not taken a redshirt, that mark would have been tops in the NCAA by more than three seconds ... Set a personal best in the 1,500 meters of 3:41.07 at the Stanford Invitational ... That mark ranks No. 4 all-time at OSU.

2012 Indoors: Earned second-team All-America recognition after running a 7:55.09 to place ninth in the 3,000 meters at the NCAA Championships ... Placed second in the mile run at the Big 12 Championships, posting a 4:06.47 to earn all-Big 12 honors ... All-Big 12 in the 3,000 meters after placing sixth with a time of 8:04.14 ... Set a personal record and the third-best 3K mark at OSU with a 7:52.38.

2011 Cross Country: Earned All-America status for the second-consecutive season after placing 31st at the NCAA Championships with a time of 29:58.6 in the 10K race ... Tabbed as an all-region selection for the second-straight year after placing sixth at the Midwest Region meet, completing the race in 31:23.03 ... Named to the all-Big 12 cross country team for the second year in a row after placing eighth, completing the 8,000 meters in 23:51.6, which is the eighth-best 8K time in OSU history ... Ran his season-best 10,000 meter time of 29:23.5 at the Chile Pepper Festival, where he placed fourth ... Came in seventh at the Cowboy Jamboree, running a 24:12.45.

2011 Outdoors: Owned the second-fastest time in the nation in the 5,000 meters during the 2011 outdoor season with a 13:26.59 run at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational ... Earned second-team All-America honors with a 14th-place finish at the NCAA meet in 14:00.24 ... Big 12 1,500 meter champion ... Clocked a season-best 1,500 meter time of 3:42.23 run at the John McDonnell Invitational ... Won the conference meet in 3:43.95 ... Ran a 3:45.88 at the Razorback Invitational ... Qualified for the NCAA Championships during the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with a time of 13:34.83 in the 5,000 meters.

2011 Indoors: Big 12 champion in the 3,000 meters, running the race in 8:00.20 ... Clocked an NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 7:54.42 at the Husky Classic ... That mark was the 20th-fastest time in the nation during the indoor season ... Placed 16th at the NCAA Championships in 8:14.16 ... His mile time of 4:02.38 at the Razorback Invitational is a top-10 all-time indoor mark at Oklahoma State and placed him 41st on the 2011 NCAA indoor list ... Ran as part of the OSU distance medley relay team that placed fifth at the Big 12 Championships in 9:52.59.

2010 Cross Country: Key member of Oklahoma State's NCAA-champion team who earned the first All-America honor of his career with a 29th-place finish at the NCAA meet in 30:21.3 ... Helped lead the Cowboys to their third-straight Big 12 team title with a fourth-place finish at the conference meet in 24:06.63 ... All-region honoree who took fourth in 29:53.38 ... Claimed the individual title at the four-mile Hurricane Invitational in 19:54 ... His 29:14.89 at the 10,000-meter Chile Pepper Festival was good for a second-place finish at the event and stands as the fifth-fastest 10K cross country time in Oklahoma State history ... Took seventh at the 8,000-meter Cowboy Jamboree in 24:28.80.

2010 Outdoors: Ran the 1,500 meters exclusively during the outdoor slate, posting a 3:42.92 competing unattached at the Arkansas Twilight meet ... That time is the second-fastest ever for an Oklahoma State freshman, trailing only the 3:39.00 that German Fernandez ran to win the 2009 NCAA championship race ... Big 12 runner-up with a 3:44.02 at the conference championships ... Ran a 3:49.69 at the Sooner Open and was 33rd in the prelims at the NCAA West Preliminary with a 3:51.13.

2010 Indoors: Earned all-Big 12 honors with a 14:12.62 in the 5,000 meters that was good for a third-place finish at the conference meet ... Set a new personal best when he ran the 3,000 meters in an NCAA-provisional time of 7:58.68 at the Husky Classic ... That mark is good for sixth on Oklahoma State's all-time indoor list and is the second-fastest time ever for a Cowboy freshman, trailing only the 7:47.97 that German Fernandez ran at the 2009 Husky Classic ... Hit a second provisional time at the Razorback Invitational with a 8:02.18 ... Ran the mile in 4:17.40 at the Wichita State Invitational.

2009 Cross Country: Did not compete for Oklahoma State, but did represent his native Great Britain at the world junior cross country championships in Poland, placing 50th at the meet in 24:33.

High School: Great Britain's top finisher at the 2009 World Junior Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jordan, placing 58th at the event ... Claimed the 3,000 meter title at the 2009 English schools outdoor track championships ... Took third representing Great Britain at an international event in Lisbon, Portugal in 2009.
