TULSA, Okla. – The No. 59 Oklahoma State men’s tennis team dropped to 2-5 Friday, falling to No. 24 Oklahoma, 4-3, in a non-conference Bedlam match at Tulsa’s Case Tennis Center.
The Cowboys got off to a quick start in doubles play to begin the dual. Although the Sooners picked up a win on the No. 3 court, OSU answered with wins from Maniel Bains and Eric West at No. 2 and Aleksey Bessonov and Vlad Bondarenko at No. 1 to earn the first team point.
Oklahoma answered quickly in singles play, however, taking the first four matches finished at Nos. 3, 6, 5 and 2, respectively, to go up, 4-1 and seal the team win.
Even though the dual was already decided, the two remaining singles matches provided plenty of excited for Oklahoma State in the form of a pair of big upset wins.
After dropping his first set, Eric West claimed a tough three-set win over No. 118 Peerakiit Siributwong at No. 4, 5-7, 6-1, 6-0, and freshman Maniel Bains picked up his first dual win of the year after winning a pair of tiebreakers over No. 28 Ionut Beleleu, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (7).
Oklahoma State resumes play March 5 as the Cowboys return to Tulsa to take on Oral Roberts.
