Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team advanced to the second round of action at the Hooters Men’s Collegiate Match Play Championship on Friday with a 3.5-1.5 victory over Wake Forest at the Barefoot Resort.
The Cowboys’ second-round matchup with No. 15 seed North Carolina State was postponed due to darkness and will resume tomorrow morning. The Wolfpack advanced to the second round after upsetting second-seeded UCLA and will enter play tomorrow with a 3-2 advantage over OSU.
The Cowboys, who entered as the event’s No. 7 seed, squared off with 10th-seeded Demon Deacons in a meeting of two of the top four finishers at last year’s NCAA Championship.
Playing at the No. 5 position, junior Dayton Rose was impressive, coasting to a 6 and 5 victory over Barr Blanton. The Midwest City, Okla., native won four of the first seven holes and never looked back to pick up the first team point for the OSU.
True freshman Tyler Leon erased a two-hole deficit to defeat Sean Moore, 2 and 1, while sophomore Chris Clarke posted the team’s other full point with a 4 and 3 win over Kyle Reifers.
Sophomore Zack Robinson waged a back and forth battle with the nation’s top-ranked player, Bill Haas, and took a 1-up lead into the final hole before Haas claimed the the 18th to halve the match.
Junior Alex NorÃ©n suffered the only defeat for OSU against the Deacons, falling 1-up to Chad Wilcox. The Stockholm, Sweden native gained the lead on the second hole and built it to three with four holes remaining before Wilcox reeled off four straight to claim the victory.
