BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Oklahoma State sophomore Peter Uihlein has been selected as the Southern Golf Association's National Amateur of the Month for September. Uihlein was a perfect 4-0 in his matches to help the U.S. win the Walker Cup over Ireland and Great Britain. His Oklahoma State teammate Rickie Fowler also was 4-0 in the Walker Cup, but Uihlein set himself apart during the month by winning medalist honors two weeks later at the Ping/Golfweek Invitational against an elite field of top collegians. In the week in between, Uihlein posted a respectable 14th-place showing at the Olympia Fields Invitational despite battling the flu. Uihlein posted a 5-under-par 211 total at the Ping/Golfweek Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. He won by two shots over the field and led OSU to the team title in a 22-stroke runaway. He became the second Oklahoma State golf team member to win the prestigious award this year. Teammate Morgan Hoffman was selected earlier this year. Another OSU teammate, Fowler, finished second in the voting by the national selection panel made up of golf officials, coaches and journalists. Fowler turned pro immediately after the Walker Cup.
