MONROE, La. - Oklahoma State's Ian Davis defeated Preston Stanley on the first extra hole on Saturday to win the 62nd annual W.E. Cole Cotton States Invitational at Bayou DeSiard Country Club.
Davis opened the event with a 36-hole total of 141 that included rounds of 64 and 77 during the stroke play portion of the event. Davis' 3-under total was good for fourth place and moved him into the 64-player match play bracket.
The Edmond, Okla., native knocked off Erik Hsu, 2 and 1, in his first-round match before notching a 4-and-3 victory over Kirk Thomas to move into the round of 16. After a 7-and-6 win over J. Marcus Sanna, Davis advanced to the semifinals with a 1-up win over Ben Pearson.
A 1-up win over Sean Romero moved Davis into the title match against Stanley, the event's No. 3 seed. Stanley held a 1-up lead through six before Davis squared the match on the eighth. The two players made the turn all square and Davis took his first lead at the 11th with a birdie. Stanley answered with a birdie at the 14th to pull back even.
Davis took the 15th with a birdie to move back in front and the two players halved the next two holes with birdies at the 16th and pars at the 17th. Stanley forced extra holes with a birdie at the 18th before Davis was able to get up and down from a bunker on the first playoff hole to claim the victory.
