STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden was drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the 22nd pick of the first round of the NFL Draft today. He joins teammate Justin Blackmon as first-round picks in this year's draft.
Weeden and Blackmon served as the most recognizable players in Oklahoma State's rise to prominence the last two seasons, as the duo helped lead the Cowboys to a 23-3 record during their time as passing game front-men.
In his two seasons as Oklahoma State's starting quarterback, Weeden was 6-0 in head-to-head battles against 2012 NFL Draft headliners Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Ryan Tannehill and Nick Foles. He led the Cowboys to their first-ever Big 12 championship, first-ever BCS bowl game appearance and first-ever BCS bowl game victory as a senior.
"Thank you to everyone who helped me get to where I am," Weeden said. "There were so many people along the way that I can't name them all. I'm honored to be in the position that I am. It's taken a lot of hard work and a lot of support from the people around me and I'm very thankful of that."
Weeden owns nearly every major Oklahoma State passing record and turned in 12 of the top 16 passing games in school history. For his career, he completed 766-of-1102 passes for 9,260 yards with 75 touchdowns. He averaged 308.7 passing yards per game. Included among the list of school records he owns are single-game, single-season and career marks for pass completions, attempts and yards in addition to the single-season and career standards for passing touchdowns.
"Brandon Weeden is in my opinion, the biggest sleeper in this draft," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. "There's some concern about his age, but his body is the same as a 22-year-old. I think his performance speaks for itself - not only his statistics, but more importantly, his ability to win. He's won 23 games in two years. In the head-to-head battles with all these other quarterbacks in the draft, he made plays and won those games."
