Cowboy Football Report, March 25

March 25, 2014

STILLWATER – Dressed in full pads, the Oklahoma State football team held its fifth practice of spring ball Tuesday at the Sherman E. Smith Training Facility. After the approximately three hour-long session, head coach Mike Gundy shared his thoughts:

On how practice went:
“It went good. I thought there was a lot of enthusiasm. The defense played very well today. I thought some of the young running backs competed. They’re starting to kind of feel their way and understand our system. I like our young defensive linemen. I think that they’re getting up the field and putting pressure on the quarterback. The attitude of the team is good.”

On the linebackers:
“Catlin is feeling his way through that spot and getting more reps than he ever has. Ramacher is getting some work in there. Devante is coming in from a junior college and he’s running to the ball, but doesn’t know what direction he’s going right now. Everything’s new. Those guys are starting to show up a little bit, but it moves fast with our offense. We stay at an up-tempo, so there’s not much time for those guys to think. They have to learn on the run.”

On Ryan Simmons becoming a leader:
“I didn’t mention his name because he’s kind of a veteran guy for us and he’s done well. He understands and he’s got to take that role in the latter part of spring and through the summer and in August. It’s his time. Lavey and Shaun and Joe Mitchell and those guys are gone, so it’s his turn and his time to step up and be a leader.”

On March Madness and who he thinks will win:
“I haven’t seen a lot because of my schedule, but I’m going to try to watch some and come up with what I think my plan will be. I do like the athleticism of Arizona, but there’s so many good coaches left in the bracket, that it’s really hard to pick because when you have those experienced coaches that have won and been in the Final Four, you never know what you’re going to get out of kids on any certain day. It will be exciting because I don’t feel like there’s any dominant team. I think there’s four, five, six teams that may win, so it should be fun for everybody to watch.”
