Syracuse, Iowa State and Central Florida were among the other schools that recruited McGill. His father is a coach at Fort Myers High School. His high school coach was Sam Sirianni, Jr. During his prep career, he threw for 4,045 yards and 58 touchdowns. He completed better than 65 percent of his passes and broke nearly every school passing record. He was first-team Class 4A all-state and the area Player of the Year.
