STILLWATER — Oklahoma State's Cowboy Basketball team received five first-place votes and is the preseason co-favorite to win the Big 12 title, tying the Kansas Jayhawks with 77 points in the 2013-14 Big 12 Preseason Coaches Poll. It marks the third time in league history that the Pokes have been the preseason selection for No. 1 in the Big 12 Conference.
With 77 points, both the Cowboys and Jayhawks received five first-place votes and four second-place votes. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team. Baylor was third with 63 points, followed by Iowa State (56 points), and Kansas State and Oklahoma (tied for fifth with 43 points each). West Virginia was awarded 35 points, Texas received 30, Texas Tech finished with 14 and TCU rounded out the league with 12.
Oklahoma State boasts the top-three returning scorers in the conference, including last season's Big 12 Player of the Year Marcus Smart. OSU has four starters back in 2013-14 and returns 95.4 percent of its points overall from a year ago. It is the first time since sharing the preseason top spot with Kansas in in 2004-05 that the Cowboys have been selected to win the league. OSU was also the preseason Big 12 favorite in 1998-99.
The Cowboys will unofficially start the 2013-14 season on Friday, Oct. 18, when they host the seventh-annual Homecoming & Hoops. Doors open at 7:30 pm, with the event beginning at 9 pm. Admission is free.
