Stillwater, Okla. — Markel Brown and Le'Bryan Nash each scored 16 points, and Oklahoma State held off a late Aggie rally as the Cowboys defeated UC Davis 73-65 here Friday night in the season opener. OSU extended its streak of consecutive wins in home openers to 38.

Marcus Smart, in his first official game as a Cowboy, stuffed the statistics sheet, scoring eight points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out seven assists. The OSU freshman had just one turnover in 34 minutes of play.

Oklahoma State led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but the Aggies kept chipping away with a balanced scoring attack and outrebounding the Cowboys 25-14 in the first half.

By the 13:35 mark of the second period, UC Davis took their first lead since scoring the first basket of the game, and led 51-48 on a three-pointer by Darius Graham. The game was tied at 61-61 with five minutes left in the game, but a layup by senior Jean-Paul Olukemi gave the Cowboys a lead they would not relinquish.

Freshman Phil Forte had 13 points off the bench, including three three-pointers. Olukemi finished with 10, and freshman Kamari Murphy scored seven points, grabbed six rebounds and had four blocked shots in the contest.

Oklahoma State will travel to Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and will face the Akron Zips in the first round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Thursday, Nov. 15. Tipoff is set for 9:30 am CT, and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
