Postgame Quotes vs Campbellsville
Sunday, October 27, 2013
Head Coach Travis Ford
"I thought Campbellsville played very well and very hard. They were scrappy. There's not a whole lot to be proud about with our team that I thought we did particularly well at all. There's a good opportunity from this game to watch some film and learn about the situations we can learn from, so that's a big positive."
On what he took out of today's outcome
"I think it's always a good opportunity when you can learn. That's why you play these, and there was a lot to learn from. It was interesting, our first two weeks of practice were phenomenal. The last week has not been very good. We played today like we've been practicing, so there will be a lot that we can learn from it. I don't think there's any question. We will learn from it. There's a lot of areas that we just didn't do very well in today."
On Campbellsville's performance
"They were a lot better than when they came in here three years ago. They played really well, and I like their basketball team. They've got some quick guards who I think we were a little hesitant to guard some times. I think we played ole' defense, and we were afraid to foul. That was good to get in a game situation because we know we are going to have to play with a more aggressive defense. We didn't play one-on-one defense well enough, didn't rebound well, and turned the ball over too much."
On if the game felt different with this year's new rule changes
"It really didn't. It didn't seem like it distracted us. From my standpoint, I didn't see that it was a major distraction or a whole lot slower. I think the biggest thing I was trying to get a feel for, and the referees and I were joking about it out there, was that they were trying to figure it out. There's some things they let go where I thought, 'That is for sure a foul.' We were all kind of just figuring it out, but I don't think it played a role in the game or a distraction at all. Yes, there were more free throws, but maybe because I was expecting it. Once we got into the bonus, I don't think we attacked enough like we've been working on and hoping to use to our advantage with the new rules."
Redshirt junior post Michael Cobbins
On today's exhibition
"We didn't come with our A-game today. We missed some shots and they capitalized on that by making some their shots. We just have to come better prepared than that."
On the attitude of the team
"It was definitely a wake-up call for a few of us. If you come out with a big head, then you see what can happen to you. It was a wake-up call, we have to get it right or it will continue to happen to us. It's a good thing that it was early and we get to fix it right away."
Senior guard Markel Brown
On today's exhibition
"We went out there underestimating those guys. And they played really well as a team. We went out there and we didn't look so good. So, when we get back to practice we have a lot of things to tighten up. Plus-three in rebounding isn't good for this team, so we have to go back and tune up some things."
On the turnovers
"We have goals for this team, how many turnovers-to-assists that we want, and right now we're in the negative column. We want that flip-flopped. Tonight, we just came out there throwing the ball around carelessly. Things we are going to get back in practice and work on."
On playing under the new rule changes
"It felt different, we couldn't really pressure the way we wanted to. (We) stayed off of guys, once we let guys attack us, we tend to let them go by us. Things like that, we have to work on in practice. The rules aren't as bad as we thought it would be. We have to go back to our way of playing defense. No matter the foul calls, not letting the guy get by us, having the first defender and having the secondary defender there for the help."
On the defensive play
"I think most of us have work to do. The officials kind of strayed away from what they were supposed to do and let us play out there. (Our) defense wasn't great at all, we played as if we couldn't touch anybody out there. We have to go back to being a physical ball club."
