OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma State kept its postseason chances alive with a 5-1 win over Oklahoma in the Bedlam Series finale Sunday at the AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
With the win, OSU improved to 30-21 overall and 7-15 in Big 12 Conference play. In order to qualify for the Big 12 Championship later this month, the Cowboys must sweep their three-game series against Texas Tech in Lubbock this weekend, and Nebraska must win all three of its games against Baylor in Lincoln.
OSU rode the right arm of junior Tyler Blandford to victory Sunday against its in-state rival. The Owensboro, Ky. native worked 8.1 innings and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out a career-high 12 to improve to 7-3 on the season. Blandford threw166 pitches in the contest, 101 of them for strikes.
The Sooners (37-16, 14-10) took the game's first lead with a run in the top of the third. After a leadoff walk to Kaleb Herren, Jamie Johnson doubled to put OU runners on second and third with no outs.
Herren would score OU's only run on a wild pitch by Blandford to put the Sooners up 1-0. Another walk and a stolen base again put OU runners on second and third with no outs, but Blandford struck out the next three batters to get out of the inning.
OSU took the lead for good via the long ball in the fourth. Dabbs led off the bottom of the inning with an opposite-field home run just over the wall in left field, his second homer of the series and 11th of the season, to tie the game at 1-1.
Three batters later, the Cowboys took the lead on another solo shot, this one off the bat of David that carried over the bullpen in left-center field. The blast, which was also David's second homer of the series and sixth of the season, gave OSU a 2-1 advantage.
OSU added to its lead in the sixth as the Cowboys rallied for three runs on four hits and knocked OU starter Garrett Richards (7-3) out of the game.
Dabbs got the rally started with a single and promptly stole second, and Tyrone Hambly followed with a bunt single to put Cowboys on first and third with one out. Up next, Neil Medchill collected an RBI with an infield single to make the score 3-1.
Tom Belza would provide OSU's fourth run with a single through the right side, and Medchill scored the final run of the frame when he scampered home on a wild pitch to put the Cowboys on top by a 5-1 margin.
OU's final scoring threat came in the eighth inning. After an error by David, a hit batter and a groundout puts Sooners on second and third with two outs, David turned in a defensive gem dove to his right and snared a line drive off the bat of Casey Johnson to end the inning and keep OU off the scoreboard.
The Cowboys open their final series of the season Friday against Texas Tech at 6:30 p.m.
