STILLWATER, Okla. – Andrew Heaney tossed his fifth complete game of the season to lead 25th-ranked Oklahoma State to a 3-2 win over Alcorn State Friday night at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Heaney allowed just one earned run in Friday’s contest, and Hunter Bailey drove in a pair of runs as the Cowboys improved to 30-19 on the season, which includes a 22-4 mark on their home field.
In his second-straight complete game, Heaney allowed only three hits and recorded 11 strikeouts. He did not walk a batter and needed just 101 pitches to finish off the Braves as he improved to 8-1 on the season. The eight wins are the most by a Cowboy pitcher since Tyler Lyons had 12 in 2008.
A junior southpaw, Heaney’s five complete games are also the most by an OSU pitcher since Spencer Grogan had seven in 2004. And Heaney raised his season strikeout total to 120, tied for the seventh-most in a single season in program history.
OSU plated its first two runs in the third inning. Wes Jones walked to lead off the frame and was followed by Gage Green, who doubled. An RBI groundout by Saulyer Saxon made the score 1-0, and Bailey brought home the Cowboys’ second run with a sacrifice fly.
The Cowboys’ final run, which proved to be the game winner, came in the sixth when a single by Bailey scored Saxon, who had opened the inning with a single before stealing second base.
After holding Alcorn State scoreless over the first seven innings, Heaney lost the shutout bid in the eighth.
Justin Perales led off the frame by reaching on an error by Bailey, and a sacrifice bunt and a hit-by-pitch put Braves on first and second with one out. Justin Barney then delivered a two-RBI double to left field to make the score 3-2. Barney was thrown out at third on the play, and Heaney got Antolin Morales to ground out to end the inning.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 2 p.m.
