OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Oklahoma State brought the winning run to the plate Saturday night against No. 8 Oklahoma, but the Cowboys could not come up with any runs as they dropped a 7-5 contest in front of 9,689 fans at RedHawks Field at Bricktown.

An OSU win would have propelled the Cowboys into a three-way tie for first place in the Big 12 Conference standings, but the Pokes remained in third as they fell to 9-5 in league play and 26-9 overall.

With the Cowboys trailing by two in the bottom of the ninth, Devin Shines collected a one-out double. After Dane Phillips struck out, Zach Johnson reached on an error to put OSU runners at first and third base. But OU closer Ryan Duke struck out Jared Womack, who was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs in the contest, to end the threat and give the Sooners the win.

OU starter Burch Smith picked up the win to improve to 6-2 as the Sooners upped their record to 26-9 and 7-6 in Big 12 play. Smith worked 5.2 innings and allowed four runs on five hits.

Brad Propst suffered his first loss in five conference starts this season for the Cowboys as he allowed six runs on eight hits in five innings of work. The senior right-hander entered the game with a 4-0 league mark and had allowed only three runs in 33 innings pitched against Big 12 foes.

The Cowboys fell behind early as OU struck for a pair of runs in its first at bat. After a one-out double by Caleb Bushyhead, a triple by Garrett Buechele brought home the Sooners’ first run. The lead reached 2-0 when Shines mishandled a line drive off the bat of Tyler Ogle.

OSU cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the first. Shines drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a stolen base and a fly out. With two outs, Jared Womack collected his third RBI of the series with a single to make the score 2-1.

The Cowboys would tie the score in the third, getting another RBI by Womack, this one on a groundout, to knot the game at 2-2.

OU took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning. Ogle led off the frame with a home run, while Casey Johnson and Drew Dahlberg collected RBI hits to put the Sooners up, 5-2.

Ogle blasted his second homer in the fifth to push OU’s lead to four, but the Cowboys rallied in the sixth with a three-run rally of their own to pull within a run.

In that inning, Womack led off with a double and scored on a single by Gabe Weidenaar. Up next, Nico Rosthenhausler singled off the leg of OU reliever Jordan John to make the score 6-4, and the Cowboys plated their third run of the frame on a throwing error by Bushyhead.

But that was as close as OSU would get as the Sooners tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Dahlberg scored on an error.
