TULSA, Okla. – Dane Phillips’ home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning lifted 18th-ranked Oklahoma State to an 8-7 win over No. 8 Oklahoma in the opening game of The Bedlam Series Friday night at ONEOK Field.
Phillips’ walk-off blast, which came off OU reliever Bobby Shore and cleared the wall in center field, gave OSU its fifth-straight win as the Cowboys improved to 26-8 overall and 9-4 in Big 12 Conference play.
Chris Marlowe picked up the win in relief for the Cowboys. The senior right hander improved to 3-2 by tossing 3.2 scoreless innings in which he racked up seven strikeouts and allowed just two hits.
In a contest in which the lead changed four times, OSU scored the game’s initial run in the bottom of the third inning. After a two-out walk to Phillips, Zach Johnson lifted a high pop up to shallow left field. The ball dropped between OU shortstop Caleb Bushyhead and left fielder Casey Johnson for a single, and the Cowboys had runners at first and third.
The Cowboys would take advantage as Jared Womack singled through the right side to give OSU a 1-0 lead.
OSU’s lead was short lived. In the fourth, the Sooners used a two-out rally of their own. A double into the left-center field gap by Ricky Eisenberg tied the score at 1-1, and Johnson followed with an RBI single to give OU the lead.
The Sooners (25-9, 6-6) added to their lead with a three-run rally in the fifth against OSU starter Mike Strong. Evan Mistich led off the frame with a double, and after Bushyhead was hit by a pitch, Garrett Buechele singled to load the bases. Up next, a two-RBI single by Tyler Ogle made the score 4-1.
A sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Chris Ellison gave OU a four-run advantage before the Cowboys, who lead the Big 12 in double plays, turned a huge double play with the bases loaded to end the inning and prevent the Sooners from extending their lead.
After falling behind 5-1 in the top of the fifth, the Cowboys erupted with a huge rally in the bottom of the inning, plating six unearned runs to regain the lead.
Things got started when, with two outs, Ellison dropped a fly ball in center field that allowed Johnson to reach second. The Cowboys followed that with four RBI singles from its next five hitters, as Womack, Mark Ginther, Gabe Weidenaar and Nico Rosthenhausler collected base hits to tie the score at 5-5.
OSU wasn’t done taking advantage of sloppy defense by the Sooners as a throwing error by Bushyhead allowed two more runs to score and make it 7-5 in favor of the Cowboys.
But OSU surrendered its lead in the sixth as the Sooners struck for two runs, getting RBI singles from Bushyhead and Tyler Ogle to once again knot the score.
The next three innings would be a pitcher’s duel between Shore and Marlowe, with Shore retiring 10-straight Cowboys before Phillips walk-off blast.
The Bedlam Series now shifts to Oklahoma City’s RedHawks Field at Bricktown on Saturday and Sunday. The two teams will square off at 7:08 p.m. Saturday and then close out the series on Sunday at 4:08 p.m.
