FORT WORTH, Texas - Oklahoma State was one out away from a series win over No. 18 TCU Sunday at Lupton Stadium, but the Cowboys would not come away victorious as the Horned Frogs earned a 6-5 win in 10 innings.
Davy Wright's double off the wall in left field with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Jerrick Suiter from first with the winning run as OSU fell to 6-6 on the season. TCU, which scored each of its six runs with two outs, is now 4-6 on the year.
The Cowboys led 5-4 with two outs and the tying run on second base in the bottom of the ninth inning when Jason Coats lifted a pop up in the air between home plate and the pitcher's mound. OSU catcher Jared Womack was under the ball but was unable to make the catch as it popped out of its glove and to the ground, allowing Wright to race home with the tying run.
In the decisive half inning, OSU reliever Gabe Weidenaar struck out Derek Odell, but Suiter followed with a single. After a fly out, Wright stepped to the plate and delivered a pitch over the head of Cowboy left fielder Gage Green, who leapt at the wall but couldn't make the catch to prevent the winning run.
OSU jumped on the Frogs early. Higgins led off the game with the first of three-straight hits for the Cowboys, a single through the left side. Up next, Womack doubled into the right-center field gap, but Higgins was thrown out at the plate. However, the Pokes would get on the scoreboard when Zach Fish delivered an RBI double down the left field line to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.
The Cowboys' lead did not last long as in the bottom of the first, TCU scored twice without collecting a hit. Leadoff hitter Kyle Von Tungeln was hit by a pitch and stole second, and after a walk to Justin Elander, the Frogs plated a pair of unearned runs.
The first run came when OSU starter Randy McCurry tried to pick Von Tungeln off second base. The throw hit the runner and caromed into right field, allowing Von Tungeln to score and Elander to advance to third. Elander then scampered home with the go-ahead run on a passed ball by Womack to make the score 2-1.
TCU took a 3-1 advantage in the third, adding another two-out run on an RBI single by Keaton Jones.
The Cowboys regained the lead with a three-run fourth inning, getting RBI singles from Rea and Jones and an RBI double by Womack that put them up 4-3.
The Frogs tied the game in the fifth, but Womack's first home run of the year, a solo shot to right-center field, put OSU back on top by a 5-4 margin.
Womack finished the contest 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Rea collected a career-high four hits in five at-bats.
OSU returns to action Tuesday with a trip to Springfield, Mo., to take on Missouri State.
