SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Oklahoma State suffered its second-straight loss to open the 2012 season as Cal Poly knocked off the Cowboys, 11-3, Saturday night at Baggett Stadium.

The Cowboys committed five errors and allowed six unearned runs in the loss, and starter Kyle Ottoson suffered the loss on the mound.

OSU finished the contest with 11 hits, with Robbie Rea’s 3-for-5 effort leading the way. Mark Ginther and Victor Romero had two hits apiece for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys threatened to get on the scoreboard in their first at bat, getting back-to-back one out singles from Rea and Ginther, but Jared Womack and Trey Whaley both grounded out to end the inning.

The Mustangs took an early lead against Ottoson in the bottom of the first. Mike Miller led off with a triple and scored on Mitch Haniger’s sacrifice fly to give the home team a 1-0 advantage. Cal Poly then made Ottoson pay for a pair of two-out walks as, following the two free passes, an infield hit and a throwing error by Ginther allowed Armendariz to score from second base.

OSU trimmed its deficit in half in the top of the third. Hunter Bailey drew a one-out walk, and Rea followed with his second hit of the game, a double just inside the left-field line that brought Bailey home. The RBI was the first of Rea’s Cowboy career.

The Cowboys’ defense came up big in the bottom of the third to keep Cal Poly from collecting its third run. After a two-out double by Nick Torres, Chris Hoo sent a sharp grounder down the first base line, but Wes Jones snagged the ball and tossed to Ottoson covering to save a run.

Cal Poly would take a 3-1 advantage in the fourth with a two-out rally. After Ottoson retired the first two batters in the frame, the Mustangs strung together three consecutive singles, the final coming off the bat of pinch-hitter Tim Wise to bring home a run.

The Mustangs took control of the contest in the fifth as they rallied for six runs on three hits. Just three of the runs were earned as OSU committed a pair of errors in the frame.

The home team knocked Ottoson from the game after three batters in the decisive fifth. Armendariz led off the inning with a single, and Torres reached on an error on his sacrifice bunt attempt. Up next, Hoo drilled a double into the left-center field gap to bring home both runners and put Cal Poly up 5-1.

Cal Poly wasn’t done, scoring their sixth run on a Blake Barnes’ balk and then getting their second two-RBI double of the inning, this one from Miller, to go up 8-1. The Mustangs recorded their final run of the big inning on a sacrifice fly by Haniger.

With OSU trailing 10-1 in the seventh, the Cowboys added a pair of runs. Jones led off the inning with a double, and two batters later, an RBI single by Hunter Bailey made it 10-2. The Pokes added their third run when Bailey scored from second on a throwing error.

The two teams conclude the series Sunday at 3 p.m. (CST).
