SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Oklahoma State got a strong pitching performance from Andrew Heaney Friday night at Baggett Stadium, but the Cowboys’ offense could not get on track as they opened the 2012 season with a 6-0 loss to Cal Poly.

The shutout loss marked the first time OSU has dropped a season opener since 2004, the Cowboys’ first season under current head coach Frank Anderson.

Prior to Friday night, the last time OSU had been shut out in a season opener was in 1972 against  Houston in a rain-shortened, five inning contest that ended 0-0. The Cowboys were also shut out by Houston in the 1971 season opener in a 1-0 loss.

Much of the contest was a pitching duel between Heaney and Cal Poly starter Joey Wagman, who picked up the win with eight innings of two-hit baseball. Chase Johnson struck out the side in the ninth to secure the win for the Mustangs.

Heaney, a junior southpaw, worked seven innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits. The 10 strikeouts bested his previous career high of eight, which came in his first start of the 2011 season against Bryant.

Cal Poly struck for its first runs in the bottom of the third as a leadoff walk came back to haunt Heaney. Evan Busby drew that free pass and after advancing to second on an error by Heaney and to third on a sacrifice bunt, he scored the game’s first run on an RBI single by Mitch Haniger.

The Mustangs weren’t done as they took a 2-0 advantage when Mike Miller, who reached on the error, scored from third on a passed ball by Jared Womack.

OSU just missed getting its first hit in the fifth when Trey Whaley was robbed of a single up the middle on a great play by Miller at shortstop.

Cal Poly threatened again in the sixth, getting back-to-back singles by Nick Torres and Chris Hoo, with one out, but Heaney got out of the jam.

After being held hitless through 6 2/3, Mark Ginther collected an opposite-field single to get OSU off the offensive snide. The Cowboys’ only other hit came in the eighth inning on a two-out double by Hunter Bailey.

Cal Poly tagged OSU reliever Jake Abbott for four runs in the bottom of the eighth to seal the win for the Mustangs.

The two teams return to action Saturday at 8 p.m. (CST).
