March 17, 2023 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The No. 2 Oklahoma State softball team collected a pair of shutout wins after beating No. 22 Arizona State, 1-0, and UCF, 4-0, Friday afternoon at Cowgirl Stadium.Â
Â
With Friday's results, the Cowgirls improved to 23-2 on the season.Â
Â
All-American Kelly Maxwell's 15 strikeout performance was the highlight of the Cowgirls' one-run victory over ASU. She pitched 7.0 scoreless innings, struck out 15 Sun Devil batters and improved to 6-0 on the year.Â
Â
The game's only run came in the first inning, courtesy of an RBI groundout from Micaela Wark that brought Rachel Becker home from third.
Â
With 15 strikeouts, Maxwell matched her season high and tallied her sixth double-digit strikeout game of the season.Â
Â
Against UCF, the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week Kyra Aycock got the start. She improved to 7-0 as she pitched 7.0 scoreless innings, striking out five, and giving up only two hits and one walk.Â
Â
The Cowgirls brought home two runs in the first inning. A leadoff walk from Becker extended her on-base streak to 25 games this season, which is every game of Oklahoma State's season.
Â
A two-run bomb from Kiley Naomi put the Cowgirls on the board, her sixth homer of the year.
Â
With the first-inning two spot, the Cowgirls have now scored first in 18 of their 25 games this season.
Â
OSU extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning after Morgyn Wynne's leadoff solo shot. It was her sixth home run of the year, which ties her with Naomi as the Cowgirls' leader.
Â
The Pokes added their final run of the game in the sixth inning after stringing together a couple base-hits.Â
Â
Scotland David – who's been kept from competition for nearly a year due to injury – notched her first career hit with a base knock to left field. An RBI double from Becker brought home OSU's fourth and final run of the game.
Â
Aycock's scoreless performance marked her fourth shutout of the season. As a starter, she's pitched 29.0 innings and allowed only one earned run.Â
Â
In games in which OSU has scored first, the Cowgirls are 18-1.Â
Â
Today's shutout victories marked the first time the Cowgirls recorded two shutouts in the same day since March 18, 2022, against Wichita State and UMKC. Â
Â
The Pokes returns for day two of the OSU Mizuno Classic tomorrow as they take on Minnesota at 2:30 p.m. CT. The game is available to stream on ESPN+ and can be heard on The Varsity Network.
