Cowgirl Softball Sweeps Day One Of Troy Cox Classic
February 24, 2023 | Cowgirl Softball
Las Cruces, N.M. – The No. 4 Oklahoma State softball team picked up a pair of wins at the Troy Cox Classic on Friday, securing a 12-1 run-rule victory in five innings over New Mexico and a 3-1 win over Nebraska.
With Friday's results, the Cowgirls improved to 10-1 on the season.
OSU scored nine runs in the first inning to immediately put the New Mexico game out of reach. All-American Kelly Maxwell improved to 5-0 in that contest after striking out 10 batters in 5.0 innings of work.
Back-to-back singles opened the first game for OSU, then a New Mexico error put Kiley Naomi on base, loading the bases for freshman Micaela Wark. A walk scored leadoff batter Rachel Becker, while a sacrifice fly from Katelynn Carwile notched OSU's second run and the first out of the inning. A groundout from Morgyn Wynne scored another, while three base hits in a row all scored a run apiece. Freshman Tallen Edwards launched her second homer of the season over the right field wall, a two-run shot that put OSU up, 9-0, after the first inning.
A one-out double from Edwards in the third inning highlighted a perfect 3-for-3 game for the freshman, tying her career high in hits. Following Edwards' base hit, another hit-by-pitch saw right-fielder Carwile up to bat with two runners on. The junior hit her first home run of the season, a three-run blast that extended OSU's lead to 12-0 and brought the game to run-rule territory.
The Lobos got their first, and only, run of the game in the fifth inning off a passed ball that scored one run. Maxwell got the final two outs, securing a 12-1 run-rule victory in five innings.
In game two against Nebraska, Kilfoyl started the game in the circle for OSU, going 7.0 innings with only two hits given up and notching five strikeouts.
After a scoreless first inning, OSU struck first in the second. Following back-to-back two-out singles, catcher Audrey Schneidmiller notched an RBI single that brought home senior outfielder Chyenne Factor to put the Cowgirls up, 1-0.
Kilfoyl and the Cowgirls' defense gave up their only run of the game in the fourth inning, a solo shot that tied the game at one apiece.
Neither team could get any offense going in the fifth and sixth innings, as OSU failed to capitalize on a bases-loaded situation in the sixth.
The Cowgirls broke the deadlock in the seventh, plating two runs following RBI base hits from Factor and Carwile. Kilfoyl took care of business in the bottom-half of the inning, securing a strikeout and a double play that ended the game, 3-1.
On an individual note, Wynne went an impressive 3-for-4 in game two against the Cornhuskers, tallying three singles.
OSU returns to play twice tomorrow, with the first game starting at 10 a.m. CT against CSU Bakersfield. The games are not televised, however can be heard on stillwaterradio.net with Brodie Myers on 105.5 KGFY.
