Hayden Wood Claims U.S. Am Medalist Honors In Record Fashion

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Oklahoma State's Hayden Wood advanced to match play in record-setting fashion on Tuesday after setting a new 36-hole scoring record at the 117th U.S. Amateur Championship.
Wood opened with a 64 at Riviera Country Club on Monday before posting a 67 at Bel-Air Country Club to secure medalist honors. With his 9-under total, the rising junior finished three shots clear of the field.
"I've changed my course management, a lot more conservative. I felt like I've been playing well all summer, but sometimes I would get in my own way. The tournaments I thought I was really going to play well when the course fit me I would maybe be a little too aggressive," Wood said.
The Edmond, Okla., native is one of six Cowboys in the field this week. Four of those six advanced to match play with the possibility of a fifth depending on the results of Wednesday's playoff.
Incoming freshman Matthew Wolff carded rounds of 73 and 67, while freshly crowned Canadian Amateur champion Zach Bauchou posted rounds of 69 and 71. The duo finished tied for 19th place at 140.
Senior-to-be Kristoffer Ventura tied for 29th at 141 after signing for scores of 74 and 67, while classmate Brendon Jelley posted rounds of 73 and 71 to tie for 57th place. He finds himself in a 13-way tie and will play off for one of the final eight spots in the match play bracket.
Rising sophomore Viktor Hovland finished at 150 and tied for 154th place.
