Fix Claims Spot on U.S. Junior World Team
June 09, 2017 | Cowboy Wrestling
LINCOLN, Neb. – Oklahoma State incoming freshman Daton Fix will make his second-straight appearance on the U.S. Junior World Team later this summer after defeating Brandon Courtney twice in the U.S. Junior World Team Trial 55kg finals on Friday night.
Â
Earning an automatic bye to the finals with his U.S. Junior National Championship title in April, Fix matched up with Courtney in a best-of-three series to decide who would represent the United States at 55kg; however, Fix didn't need three matches, as he defeated Courtney by way of technical fall in both of the first two. Fix outscored Courtney, 27-4, in the series, tallying a 12-0 tech fall in the first match and a 15-4 tech fall in the second.
Â
Fix advances to his second consecutive UWW Junior World Championships, and will look to build off of a bronze medal performance at the 2016 tournament. The 2017 Junior Worlds are set for Aug. 1-6 in Tampere, Finland.
Â
Two other Cowboys also competed for spots on the U.S. Junior World Team on Friday, but came up just short.
Â
Andrew Marsden earned a bye to the 96kg finals with an impressive showing at the Junior National Championships as well. Matched up with defending U.S. Junior team member Kollin Moore, Marsden dropped two matches in the final. Moore claimed the first match, 13-2. In the second match, the pair traded blows for a high-scoring 11-8 first period, but Moore would come up victorious, 20-8.
Â
Cowboy freshman Keegan Moore notched a couple of wins Friday to advance as far as the 84 kg semifinal, defeating Spencer Carey, 14-10, followed by an 11-6 victory over Taylor Venz. Moore's run was halted by North Carolina State's Nick Reenan, who defeated Moore by way of a 12-2 technical fall.
Â
Action in Lincoln is set to continue Saturday morning with the U.S. Senior World Team Trials. Five current and former Cowboys will be competing in the event, including Alex Dieringer, Dean Heil, Chris Perry, Kyle Crutchmer and Josh Kindig.
