STILLWATER, Okla. ---- Oklahoma State softball dropped round one of Bedlam in a tightly contested 3-0 loss to No. 7 Oklahoma Wednesday at Cowgirl Stadium.

The Cowgirls looked primed to score in the bottom of the sixth with bases loaded, one out and trailing 3-0 but the Sooners escaped with an inning-ending double play to hang on to the victory.

"Good softball game," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "Congrats to OU for clinching the league. They're a really good team. Well coached. That was a good softball game all the way around. Our first three innings of at-bats were not very good. I thought we were a little bit timid, defensive. Once we got through that, I felt like we started to really go and had some chances.

"That's what this is all about. It's about growth. Nice thing about not having to play until Friday night now is we can go back and watch this game and show our kids and learn. We'll look at that, and look forward to having another crack at them Friday night."

Oklahoma State (33-20 Overall, 12-4 Big 12) stood toe-to-toe with the defending national champions from the start as the teams traded scoreless innings through three.

The Sooners (45-8, 15-1) struck first with one in the fourth and two in the fifth to secure the victory.

The Cowgirls, facing one of the best pitchers in the country in Paige Parker, managed four hits and two walks.

Jessi Haffner, Alex Edinger, Vanessa Shippy and Madi Sue Montgomery each went 1-for-3 on the night to account for the four Cowgirl hits.

Brandi Needham (18-7) took the loss in the circle for the Cowgirls.
