Udwadia Named ITA Central Region Coach of the Year
May 15, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State men's tennis head coach Jay Udwadia was named the 2017 Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region Coach of the Year, it was announced Monday.
Udwadia's selection marks the second time that he has been honored as the regional coach of the year, having previously been tabbed as the Northwest Regional Coach of the Year in 2012 while at Fresno State. It is also the first time the OSU men's tennis head coach has received the honor since James Wadley in 2009.
This season marked Udwadia's fifth season in Stillwater, and the 2016-17 campaign was arguably the most successful of his tenure.
During 2017, Udwadia captained the Cowboys to the highest-recorded ranking in team history, as the squad came in at No. 4 in the Oracle/ITA Team Ranking on March 4. OSU has also been ranked inside the top-10 for the past 11 weeks, which is the longest streak in the program's illustrious history.
Under Udwadia's tutelage, OSU knocked off 11 ranked opponents, eight of which held spots in the top-15. The Cowboys' biggest win of the season came on April 9 when they won four of the six singles matches to secure a 4-3 comeback win over No. 3 Baylor in Waco, Texas. The singles surge gave OSU its first win over a top-three opponent since 2001 and locked up the Cowboys' first above-.500 finish in the Big 12 since 2008.
During his tenure at OSU, Udwadia has overseen 24 Academic All-Big 12 selections, three All-Americans, the nation's top-ranked doubles tandem, three Big 12 Newcomers of the Year, eight Big 12 Player of the Week selections and 13 All-Big 12 honorees. His 93 victories at Oklahoma State also rank as the third most by a head coach in team history.
