HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Battling windy conditions at Prairie Dunes Country Club, Oklahoma State's men's golf team carded a 302 total during its first round to stand alone atop the leaderboard at the Big 12 Championship on Monday.
The Cowboys' 22-over score came on a day with wind gusts over 40 miles per hour, which led to the postponement of the afternoon's second round. The field will now play 36 holes on Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. The event's final round is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
OSU finished the day with a four-shot cushion over Kansas at the par-70, 6,940-yard layout. Baylor was third, finishing one shot behind the Jayhawks with its 307 total.
Kansas produced the day's low individual score with Daniel Hudson posting a 2-over 72 to stand one shot clear of a quartet of players.
Among the group at 3-over was OSU's Viktor Hovland. The freshman carded a bogey-free front nine with birdies at the third and seventh to turn at 2-under 33. After playing the first four holes of his inward nine in 6-over par, Hovland rallied with four pars and a birdie over his final five holes.
"I was very pleased with my round. I got off to a very good start. I was 2-under par on the front nine and hit the ball very good. I hit the first seven greens in a row and just kept two-putting," Hovland said. "I had a little debacle on the back nine, but I just kept the ball in play and just made pars."
Hovland was joined in the top 10 by sophomore Zach Bauchou and senior Zachary Olsen. Bauchou carded an opening 75 to stand in a tie for sixth place, while Olsen was a stroke back with his 76 tying him for eighth place.
Sophomore Hayden Wood posted a 78 to come in tied for 18th place, while junior Kristoffer Ventura's 84 tied him for 42nd place.
