STILLWATER – The eighth-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team sent its three standout seniors off with a win Friday night at the Greenwood Tennis Center, recording its third-straight sweep with a 4-0 victory over No. 34 Oklahoma on Senior Day. The win marked the Cowgirls' fifth-straight triumph over the Sooners.
Â
The Cowgirls (18-4, 6-1 Big 12) have now recorded 11 sweeps in their 18 wins this season, and have won 10 of their last 11 matches overall.
Â
"It was great," head coach Chris Young said. "It was a great crowd, and one of the better crowds that I can remember here. We really appreciate people coming out. It says a lot about the support that we get. Everything came out as we had hoped."
Â
OSU opened the match with a 1-0 lead, thanks to wins from its No. 2 and 3 tandems to clinch the team's 19th doubles point of the season. Sofia Blanco and Aliona Bolsova struck first, tallying a 6-2 win over Oklahoma's Lily Miyazaki and Christiana Brigante for their fifth-straight win to move to 23-6 overall this season. Seniors Katarina Adamovic and Viktoriya Lushkova clinched the point for the Cowgirls with a dominant, 6-1 win over Ann Selim and Simran Sethi.
Â
The Cowgirls opened singles play by taking four first sets to hold the Sooners at a comfortable distance throughout the match. OSU used wins from Aliona Bolsova, Vladica Babic and finally senior Katarina Adamovic to secure its 18th victory of the season.
Â
Babic was the first Cowgirl to win her singles match, dropping Malene Stripp, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 4 to stretch the OSU lead to 2-0. The reigning Big 12 Player of the Week, Babic has won three-straight matches to move to 17-8 overall and 10-6 in dual play after Friday's win.
Â
Bolsova showed no signs of being flustered in her first career Bedlam match. The 57th-ranked freshman pulled out a 7-5, 6-2 tally over Julie Byrne on court three to put the Cowgirls a point away from clinching. Bolsova pushed her record on the season to 24-7 overall with a 13-4 mark since the beginning of the spring season. Her 24 wins lead the team.
Â
It seemed only fitting that a senior would close out the Pokes' final home match of the regular season, and Katarina Adamovic did just that with a 6-1, 6-1 dominant display against Oklahoma's Mimi Fotopoulos for the senior's first clincher of the season. Adamovic owns an 11-2 mark in dual matches this season and has won six of her last seven dating back to February.
Â
"It was emotional," Adamovic said. "To be honest, I just really wanted to win today. It was special that I was able to clinch the match against OU on Senior Day. The fans were amazing. I love playing in front of big crowds. It gives me motivation. It feels good."
Â
"I think it was probably meant to be for Kat to be the one to clinch here," Young said. "She loves playing in front of home crowds as much as anybody I've ever seen. For her to get that final match, I think there is a little bit of relief and also pride and accomplishment that she was able to be the one to do it. If you were going to script it, you couldn't have scripted it any better. Some of the underclassmen came out and dominated, then Kat finished up in dramatic fashion."
Â
The Cowgirls will be back in action next weekend, as they wrap up the regular season slate on the road against West Virginia and Iowa State. With a sweep of next week's road trip, OSU can clinch its third consecutive 20-win season.
