STILLWATER – Oklahoma State gave up a ninth inning lead and suffered a 5-3 loss to West Virginia in 10 innings Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
Â
The loss snapped OSU's nine-game home winning streak as the 23rd-ranked Cowboys fell to 16-10 overall and 1-4 in Big 12 Conference play.
Â
The win by WVU (14-10, 3-2) sets up a series rubber game Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
Â
OSU took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning Saturday with a two-out rally. After back-to-back singles by Garrett Benge and Garrett McCain, Colin Simpson stepped to the plate and blasted a three-run home run to right field to put the Pokes on top.
Â
Simpson's second home run of the season provided the lone scoring in the game until the seventh as OSU starter Jonathan Heasley worked five scoreless innings and struck out five.
Â
The Mountaineers would get their first run in the seventh against Trey Cobb, who made his season debut after being out with an elbow injury.
Â
After working a perfect sixth, Cobb gave up a single to open the seventh before leaving with one out and a runner on second. Carson Teel came on in relief and struck out the first batter he faced before an RBI single cut the OSU lead to 3-1.
Â
The Cowboys held that lead until the ninth.
Â
Down to their final two outs, WVU's Jackson Cramer drew a walk against OSU closer Jake Cowan. That brought Cole Austin to the plate, and the Mountaineers' cleanup hitter responded with a game-tying two-run homer to left field before Cole Hearrean came on and retired the next two batters to send the game into extra innings.
Â
OSU was poised to win the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth. After Benge walked to open the frame, McCain laid down a sacrifice bunt to move him into scoring position. But Simpson and Cade Cabbiness struck out to end the threat.
Â
WVU plated the decisive runs in the 10th. Braden Zarbnisky got the inning started with a double and later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch before a single by TJ Lake pushed the lead to 5-3.
Â
Zarbnisky set down the Cowboys in order in the bottom of the 10th to seal the win.
Â
OSU managed just six hits in the contest, two of those by McCain.
