STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's winning streak reached eight Tuesday night as the 16th-ranked Cowboys handed No. 10 Oklahoma a 4-3 loss in a non-conference Bedlam tilt at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The win was OSU's fourth over a ranked team this season as the Pokes improved to 15-6 while snapping OU's four-game winning streak and dropping the Sooners to 21-4.
Colin Simpson, Ryan Sluder and Cade Cabbiness collected RBIs for the Cowboys, while Blake Battenfield picked up the win on the mound and Jake Cowan recorded a save.
OSU took a lead it never surrendered in the second inning when Simpson blasted his first home run of the season, a solo shot to right field with one out. The homer was one of two hits for the Cowboy catcher on the night.
The Cowboys increased their lead with two more runs in the third. After Cabbiness singled to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a Cameron Dobbs' bunt, Sluder delivered an RBI single to left-center field to make the score 2-0. Ryan Cash followed with a single of his own to put OSU runners on the corners, and Garrett Benge then brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to mark his sixth-straight game with at least one RBI.
Both teams would plate runs in the fourth inning, with OU getting its first score off reliever Joe Lienhard in the top of the inning before the Pokes got the run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Cabbiness.
The sixth inning proved pivotal as the Sooners threatened to put together a big inning against Carson Teel. After the southpaw came out of the bullpen and struck out the first batter he faced, OU recorded three consecutive singles to load the bases. A walk then brought home a run to make the score 4-2 before Teel escaped the jam with an inning-ending double play on a groundball to shortstop.
OU's final run came in the eighth when Steele Walker led off the inning with a triple and later scored on a balk.
The Sooners would bring the go-ahead run to the plate in both the eighth and ninth innings against Cowan, but both times he was able to stop the rally and pick up his second save of the season.
Battenfield worked three scoreless innings and allowed only one hit to win his second-straight start and improve to 2-0.
OSU now turns its attention to Big 12 Conference play, with the Cowboys opening league action Friday at No. 3 TCU.
