Teel Named Big 12’s Best, Also Tabbed One Of Nation's Top Performers
March 13, 2017 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's Carson Teel has been named this week's Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week, it was announced by the league office today, and the Cowboy pitcher was also named one of 10 Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week honorees.
A sophomore southpaw, Teel came out of the OSU bullpen and recorded a pair of wins last week for the Cowboys. He worked nine innings over two games and racked up 15 strikeouts, the most of any Big 12 hurler on the week, while allowing just one run on four hits and one walk.
In a midweek game against No. 27 Missouri State, Teel came on to start the third inning in a game OSU trailed 2-0 and dominated the final seven innings to lead the Cowboys to a win. He recorded 10 strikeouts, besting his previous career high of four and marking the most punchouts by an OSU pitcher this season. Teel retired the first eight MSU batters he faced and continued to get better over his career-long outing as he struck out five in a row at one point in the late innings (final two batters in seventh inning, all three in the eighth).
The second and series-deciding game of a Sunday doubleheader against South Dakota State saw Teel again shine. This time, he was forced into duty early, as OSU's starting pitcher lasted just six pitches before leaving with an injury. Teel came on with runners on first and second and no outs, and a throwing error plated a run before a single loaded the bases with no outs. He then struck out three-straight batters to get out of the jam without any further damage, then worked a scoreless second inning - picking up two more strikeouts - to fuel OSU's victory.
Teel's honor marks the third Big 12 weekly award for OSU this season. On Feb. 27, Garrett Benge was named the Big 12 Player of the Week while Travis Wacker collected Big 12 Newcomer of the Week accolades.
